Being a Police Officer gives you a unique sense of belonging and teamwork, a sense of doing something that matters and a personal pride in fulfilling a role that’s essential to society. Each day asks searching question of you and requires you to put personal feelings aside as you uphold the law. It’s about leading responsibly, acting decisively, stepping up to protect the public and embracing a whole new way of working. If you can accomplish all of these and you’ve the right attitude, then maybe this is your calling. If you do decide to join Bedfordshire, after training, you’ll probably be posted to response policing where you’ll work rotating shifts, respond to calls from the public and patrol specific areas. Within your first five years, you can expect to serve two years in Luton, after which you can diversify into neighbourhood policing, CID, firearms, dogs, road policing and numerous small units specialising in specific areas of investigation. In terms of what we look for, besides physical fitness, you’ll need to be someone clear about the role you’re taking on and you’ll have spoken to family and friends to gage the impact your decision could have on their life. You need to understand that you may not finish work on time and you may have seen or done things you do not want to talk to others about (or simply can’t discuss). There will be an impact on relationships, social lives, family and childcare - all of which need to be carefully considered. There’s a lot to think about before deciding to become a Police Officer and we’d recommend you take as long as you need to make a decision.
